About the Event
Panel session and talks on the theme of 'Linking knowledge and action for climate-resilient fisheries and fishing communities'. Co-convened with Lindsey Williams, UNH.
Climate change is bringing new challenges and opportunities to fishing communities and fisheries management in the Northeast. Many efforts are underway to understand past, current, and projected changes in ocean conditions, their effects on target species and ecosystems, and how communities will respond. In parallel, marine managers in the Northeast are working toward ecosystem-based and climate-ready fisheries management. However, incorporating climate knowledge into management processes and implementing climate-ready practices remains challenging.
In this symposium, we will discuss research priorities for management needs in the Northeast; incorporating climate, ecosystem, and social indicators into fisheries management processes in the Northeast, and other opportunities and best practices for conducting and communicating actionable climate resilience research. We invite decision-makers, council staff, government scientists, academics, and other stakeholders to participate. Following brief presentations from the speakers, we will hold a facilitated discussion about how to make climate-based fisheries research more actionable in the Northeast.
